Model Based Systems Engineering with custom Domain Specific Language in the Medical Domain

Thirty years ago standalone and isolated products, like a Computer Tomography system have been standard. In contrast, nowadays the development of global products and their integration into globally diversified solution environments drive the complexity of x-system integration and communication.

This increasing product complexity has driven the development of new methods and digital tools over the last decades. Today 3D-CAD is the standard, having replaced the pencil and paper approach of mechanical engineers in the last century. Similarly other digital tools within other functional domains have been evolved over the last decades. So today we find discipline dependent digital approaches in the different functional silos, but unfortunately without any digital interconnection and data exchange in between. Model Based System Engineering by itself is the digital approach for System Engineering and is primarily focused on the functional silo of system engineering. Nevertheless, as system engineers care about and connect all lifecycle phases and functions the MBSE model provides the capability to seamlessly link all information sources together, which will lead to seamless engineering. Seamless engineering is defined as seamless information exchange which allows, beyond a functional impact analysis concurrent engineering based on shared single point of truth (SPoT), which will enable x-functional and x-discipline simulation. This approach for MBSE in the healthcare domain will be the context for the given thesis.

Siemens Healthineers

This thesis is offered in cooperation with Siemens Healthineers. Siemens Healthineers is a leading global medical technology company. 71,000 dedicated employeers in over 70 countries are driven to shape the future of healthcare. An estimated 5 million patients across the globe benefit every day from our innovative technologies and services in the areas of diagnostic and therapeutic imaging, laboratory diagnostics and molecular medicine, as well as digital health and enterprise services.

Topics and Approaches

  • You investigate a unique and novel Domain Specific Language (DSL) for Systems Engineering by modelling functional and other viewpoints for systems in the medical domain.
  • You model a reference system including their subsystems which are integrated and interact with each other
  • You suggest changes to said DSL based on state-of-the-art MBSE concepts and approaches from academia and the industry best practices.

Our Offer:

  • Contribute to the success of a globally active company of medical systems
  • Getting insights into the conceptual work of engineers in the healthcare domain
  • Working with and contributing to cutting edge MBSE methodology

Your Profile:

  • Pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science or similar
  • Basic Understanding of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Interest in learning MBSE tools like MagicDraw
  • Understanding of concepts of Object Oriented Design is helpful
